Dear friends of the Pufendorf IAS,
The new year may already feel a little old - but not at the Pufendorf Institute for Advanced Studies. The winter cold hasn’t slowed us down one bit. New Advanced Study Groups are kicking off, and we were delighted to receive a record number of Theme applications, a wave of fresh ideas and inspiring new research directions. Initiatives we started last year are gaining momentum and new initiatives will be launched in 2026. We're also been busy with the question of whether we can study phenomena that we do not understand. For the press the idea that highly respected researchers at Lund University could be poised to study anomalous objects such as UAPs was surprising, even shocking. But for us this is really what defines research, it all begins with phenomena that we do not understand! / Stacey Ristinmaa Sörensen, Director of the Pufendorf IAS | New board members In December 2025, the institute expressed warm thanks to three departing members – Cecilia Lundberg, Susanne Lundin, and Fredrik N. G. Andersson – for their dedicated, enthusiastic contributions to The Pufendorf IAS over the years. In January 2026, we welcomed three new members: Johan Östling, Jessica Abbott and Per Becker.

| Revisiting one initiativePufendorf Academy - a way for young researchers to "learn the tricks of the interdisciplinary trade" - is the logical continuation of LMK Foundations Idea Forum. Our present "cohort" started in October 2025 and ends in June 2026. The Foundation will soon launch this years call for nominations, which means we look forward to send out invitations to Pufendorf Academy early June.

Reporting at its bestReporting is generally considered as an important and necessary activity. But fun? It can be! When we did our "re-cap" for 2024, it was well received and we were proud of our Institute for Advanced Studies. So we followed up by reporting 2025 as well. The reports are in Swedish and are available on our Swedish website. Enjoy: Organisation and Management | The Pufendorf Institute for Advanced Studies | Happy Valentine!
What started as colleagues within an interdisciplinary research group at Pufendorf IAS has now become the ultimate office love story – perfect to tell this time of year. The couple who first met here in 2023 are saying “I do” to each other in April. They’re planning part of the wedding celebrations here at Pufendorf IAS, the place that brought them together in the first hand. This reminds us that even in the middle of meetings, deadlines, interdisciplinary discussions, and constructive friction, magic can happen. A big congratulations to the happy couple: Karin and Christopher!

The ranking includes around 2,000 higher education institutions from about 100 countries. It measures how universities contribute to a sustainable future. To be an active part of this year's sustainability week seems... timely. Hopefully we will not only provide a venue for various talks during the week, but also contribute with content.
